“As an educator, I always need to make decisions and changes based on data. However, this program has shown me that that data is much richer and more nuanced than I realized. My hope is that the Learning Analytics program will allow me to develop skills that I can bring back to my school district to make a difference in our students’ education.”
MATHEMATICS TEACHER
Fiona earned her BA in Mathematics Secondary Education from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where she graduated summa cum laude. She was also inducted into the Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics honor society as an undergraduate student. She works as a high school mathematics teacher for Jenison Public Schools in Jenison, Michigan. She currently teaches geometry to ninth grade students. Prior to beginning her teaching career, she served as the Waterfront and Challenge Director at Camp Geneva in Holland, Michigan, where she worked to deliver safe and developmentally appropriate programming for elementary, middle, and high school youth.
TEACHING RESILIENCE AND ADAPTING INSTRUCTION
Fiona works primarily with students who are taking the first mathematics class of their high school careers. She is passionate about not only collaborating with colleagues to scaffold initial instruction but also about equipping students with the tools to try again when they do not master a concept the first time. She is excited about learning new ways to use data to make informed instructional decisions that will benefit her students and improve their experience in class. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys blending her background as both an educator and a former competitive swimmer by serving as a lifeguarding instructor and an age group swim coach.
