“Effective community-based participatory research requires that researchers have a strong working relationship with the communities in which they study. To establish these relationships, it is important to learn how to communicate the study design and findings to a variety of audiences. Through this program, I hope to learn how to integrate the experiences of educators and curriculum designers into data so that I can help conduct future educational research in a more equitable manner.”
RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON
Emma is a Research Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Center for Healthy Minds working under Dr. Simon Goldberg on a precision medicine-like clinical trial. She previously worked at the Waisman Center as the lab manager for Dr. Rebecca Alper’s Language, Literacy, & Learning Lab where she facilitated a clinical behavioral trail that focused on family-centered early language and literacy intervention. In that position, she grew to love community-based participatory research designs. Outside of research, she enjoys teaching languages, including English and Spanish.
INTEGRATING RESEARCH AND TEACHING
Her established love for research influences her other passions. Her time spent teaching languages contributes to her interest in research on second-language acquisition and curricula design for language learners. In the future, she hopes to contribute to community-based participatory research that utilizes a mixed-method approach to incorporate voices from second-language learners, educators, policymakers, linguists, and other researchers to help facilitate learning and mutual understanding among all students. Specifically, she is interested in exploring the benefits of translanguaging in the classroom.
